Food, Baby!: Burro Cheese Kitchen Review

Let it be known, I love cheese. Soft, hard, moldy or fresh, I’m an equal opportunist cheese-a-saurus. So when I heard about Burro Cheese Kitchen, a gourmet grilled cheese trailer, naturally I was dying to try it out. But once I got one bite of their burnt and overpriced sandwiches, I was not impressed.

First, let’s talk about grilled cheese. It’s the simplest thing in the world to make. In fact, it was the first thing I learned how to cook. All you need is some bread, maybe a little butter, a hot pan, cheese and BAM! There you have it. It’s so easy—and with artisan ingredients, how can you mess it up? Maybe by burning it and then charging $6.50 or more a pop.


Instead of going for one of their specialty sandwiches, like the “Waylon and Willie” beer-soaked cheddar and gruyere sandwich on beer bread with onions, pepperoncini with a side of spicy maple bacon, I opted for a build-your-own. I ordered lavender cheddar on gluten-free white bread with balsamic apricot fig preserves and redneck cheddar on King’s Hawaiian bread with almond pesto aioli.

In some cases a little char adds to an entree, but in this case the over-eager grill marks only masked the beautifully subtle experience of their gourmet cheeses. I was also expecting a little bit more substance in terms of portion size, as well. I devoured my entire sandwich and ate a bite of a friend’s, but still left their cute establishment hungry.

However, the atmosphere of the trailer is adorable. It’s a customized bright yellow steel cargo container with a patio and space for four tables. In terms of style, Burro Cheese Kitchen is adding a touch of class to South Congress trailer park.
Although the concept behind this trailer is intriguing on paper, the execution of too-toasted sad sandwiches wrapped in butcher paper was disappointing and overpriced.

If I find myself on South Congress and I have a little extra change rolling around in my pocket, I’d be willing to try them again. But next time, I’m going with the specials.
