Fall Fashion: This Calls for a Closet Renovation

With a new semester comes the opportunity to try new things. To turn this fall into a memorable fashion moment, dress to impress. The whole “but I’m in college and I have the right to dress in workout clothes” excuse has expired.

As Diane von Furstenberg once said, “Be the woman you want to be.” The clothes you wear have power. They say something about you. Have you ever noticed that the outfit you wear can alter your mood? When you feel good about yourself, it’s easy for others to pick up on that.

Okay, so we’re in college and most of us would rather sleep in than spend a few minutes planning an outfit in the morning (and, honestly, quitting cold turkey isn’t for everyone). You might need to ease into your new fashion-savvy self. It’s completely acceptable to have cheat days. Like any diet, you’re allowed some wiggle room. Don’t stress about your new wardrobe goals. This is a process you should enjoy. Above all, have fun with it.

To get yourself started, here’s a list of key fall staples that should spark your fashion rejuvenation, while maintaing your personal style.

1. Jeans: The popular fall colors are emerald, maroon, and army green. The trick with jeans is that they have to fit well (you’d think it’s common sense, but you’d be surprised). If you’re always tugging at the waist to keep the jeans from falling, you’re going to have to invest in a new pair. For girls with curves, you’re going to need jeans that aren’t low-rise. Don’t knock down the high-waisted trend until you’ve tried it. It’s also crucial to keep the back-pockets simple, unless you’re looking to emphasize your rear. Show off what you got, but make sure it flatters your body.

2. A sturdy jean or leather jacket: It really depends on what you’re into when choosing between the two. Jean jackets work perfectly to tone down a dressier outfit. Leather jackets are a little trickier to master, but once you’ve found the right one, you’ll be lovestruck. Try either jacket with a hi-low dress, or some ankle boots.

3. The flats, the boots and the sandal: It’s hard to successfully complete an outfit without the perfect shoes. For flats, buy a neutral pair that will go with almost anything. However, flats also pose an opportunity for creativity, so don’t shy too far away from bright neons and prints. Also, don’t forget a good pair of boots. Last season was all about riding boots, but this fall calls for a the difficult-to-dress ankle boot (make yourself the ankle boot master). As for sandals, skip the bling and go for a black shoe with a gold or silver accent.

4. A comfortable oversized sweater: The cut and fit of a sweater is very important. You shouldn’t look like you’re drowning in fabric. Some medium sizes are actually too big, and some large sizes are too small. You’ll just have to spend some time in the fitting room. Buffalo Exchange always has interesting looking sweaters on the racks (get to shopping while it’s hot and the sweaters are cheap!). Try pairing your sweater with a dress.

5. Fitted blouse: We all need a dressy, fitted blouse. Think J. Crew. This blouse will come in handy when you’re in a rush to get dressed, or those times when you’re not too sure of the formality of the event. Be prepared.
